A cleverly designed micro-home offers extreme compact living.

German architect Nils Holger Moormann has designed a unique compact living structure that resembles a kind of narrow garden shed. Called the “Walden” (after Henry David Thoreau’s book by the same name), this portable home is only 3 feet wide but accommodates a lot, thanks to the ingenious design. The Walden features an open-sided living, dining and reading room. A set of stairs connects to an enclosed bedroom space with small slot windows and a large roof-spanning skylight that slides open to allow more light. The cabin’s walls have several built-in cabinets to store all kinds of equipment and cupboards that can be used for storing tableware and other objects. Walden seems a perfect mobile unit for an individual or two to live in natural surroundings or even on private lands.
